The premise is that instead of freeing us from the heavy stuff of the industrial age, technology has in fact added another layer of stuff, which hides exponentially greater amounts of waste and environmental destruction than the previous age. The chapter promotes concepts like tool use over tool ownership, and smart networks allowing smarter use of resources. The catch: No words allowed!My solution: Taxzhee! is an educational game with custom paper dice and a scorepad that uses only icons and numbers. The game is simple and fun, yet conveys many of the nuances of cab hailing. Roll the first die and you may get a cab that's off duty, on duty, or available. The second die teaches what to do with your hand—penalties for using your iPhone or the flippin the bird! The third die tumbles you through the circumstances that can affect your chances of getting a cab. 4 p.m. shift change? Lose 5 points. Sunny? Gain 10 points. Encounter Travis Bickle? Ouch! As designers, perfectionism is a good thing--we keep re-doing a piece until every detail is correct. Unfortunately, that leaves us with a lot of pretty paper waste. Elizabeth Kuehnen and I created an event at Pratt to do something to capitalize on this and turn our mistakes into something marvelous--sketchbooks. We got everyone to keep their lovely discarded color printouts and then had a bookmaking workshop using the paper. We learned some skills, guzzled tea, saved trees, and a good time was had by all.
